At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
