Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
